Residents of the Hohoe Municipality have been cautioned that failure to participate in the National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise and comply with sanitation requirements could result in prosecution and conviction.

The warning was issued by Mr Daniel Dotse Eklo, Environmental Health Analyst and Prosecutor of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, during the municipality’s National Sanitation Day activities.

Mr Eklo explained that the sanitation exercise should not be viewed merely as a voluntary community clean-up programme. Rather, residents have responsibilities under Ghana’s sanitation regulations to maintain clean and healthy surroundings.

He therefore urged residents, households, businesses and other stakeholders to take the exercise seriously and actively participate in efforts to improve sanitation within their communities.

The Environmental Health Prosecutor indicated that the Assembly has the authority to take action against persons who violate sanitation regulations.
Residents who disregard sanitation directives could consequently find themselves before the courts, where offenders may face penalties upon conviction.

The warning forms part of broader efforts by the Hohoe Municipal Assembly to strengthen enforcement of environmental health and sanitation regulations.

Mr Eklo’s comments also underline the Assembly’s increasing emphasis on moving beyond periodic clean-up exercises towards greater compliance with sanitation laws and individual responsibility for environmental cleanliness.

The National Sanitation Day exercise brought together residents and stakeholders to undertake cleaning activities in various parts of the municipality.

The exercise is intended to encourage communities to clear rubbish, clean public spaces and improve general environmental conditions.
Residents were encouraged not to restrict their sanitation efforts to the designated NSD period but to make regular cleaning and proper waste management part of their everyday activities.
