On Wednesday, 15th July, 2020, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrews Teddy Ofori commissioned a modern abattoir to ensure that the slaughtering and processing of animals are done under hygienic conditions to ensure quality and safe meat is made available for public consumption.
The abattoir which is estimated to cost around GHc 820,000 was constructed under the Assembly’s District Performance Assessment Tool (D-PAT). It has a processing room, cold room, a cutting machine and room, a biogas plant, a mechanized borehole, offices, washrooms and security gate.
The MCE, who commissioned the facility, said the old abattoir had outlived its usefulness and that the place was no longer hygienic for use hence the need for a new state of the art facility.
He said, the Assembly will procure a van to enable easy transportation of meat from the abattoir to marketing centres and renovate the old abattoir into a meat selling point.
He called on the butchers to observe Covid-19 safety protocols and hygiene practices in treating meat for public consumption adding that their levies and fees to the Assembly must be fulfilled for the maintenance of the facility.
Mr Ofori added that the Veterinary and Environmental Health Departments would monitor and supervise operations at the new abattoir in line with strict adherence to food safety and hygienic practices.
Togbe Vule V, Divisional Chief of Gbi-Bla, noted that the abattoir will enhance hygienic practices and protect against any public health issues that may stem from unhygienic slaughtering processes in the municipality. He also called on the butchers to take care of the facility.
Alhaji Adam Issifu, Assistant Chief Butcher, Hohoe Butchers Association, expressed gratitude to the assembly for the facility and pledged to maintain the facility.
He added that, the Association will entreat its members to adhere to hygienic practices in the meat processing.
